voc ep: 58 Waverly Evans

Waverly Wilson Evans (89) of Smith Island, Maryland, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2015. Born on Tylerton on June 8, 1926, Waverly Evans was a waterman (crabs and oysters), and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Following his retirement, he obtained his Captain's license for offering fishing charters, and also was a tour guide for the island. A member of Union United Methodist Church on Tylerton, he was a Sunday School Teacher, Lay Leader, Choir member, and a member of the Smith Island Men's Quartet. He was a member of the Chesapeake Masonic Lodge #147 AF&AM in Crisfield, a charter member and first chief of the Tylerton Fire Department, member and past president of the former Tylerton Lions Club, and was inducted into the Watermen's Hall of Fame during the annual Soft Shell Festival. He was also a member of the Smith Island Baseball Team, traveling for games all over the Eastern Shore. He adored fishing, coffee, figs, and his shanty cats. He was also an accomplished folk artist and wood worker.
